What are Dentistry Veneers?

A dental veneer is basically a layer of material placed over a tooth. Once upon a time veneers were made out of wood, bone, and even ivory! Could you imagine using a piece of an elephant tusk in your mouth as a tooth?! Yikes! Thankfully, evolution in medical technology has come a very long way since the use of wooden and elephant bone teeth caps. Today most dental veneers are made out a high tech resin composites or dental porcelain.

Are dental veneers for adults and children, or just adults?

Our Dental office can do both, but not all dental office can.

As pediatric dentists, we can do veneers for both adults and children. Other dentist might not have the experience, education, and qualifications to work with your children.

Why would someone want to use something like a dental veneer?

There are two main reasons why someone would want to get a veneer; aesthetics and structural support, and maybe even a combination of both at the same time.

There are several reasons why someone would want to get a veneer for aesthetic purposes. Maybe someone was born with a majority of beautiful straight looking teeth, except for one tooth that they always thought didn’t look perfect. It was just always a little crooked, and for that reason they were always a little annoyed by it. They could get a veneer for that tooth to make that perfect set of teeth really come alive and shine in their winning smile. Erasing any old fears about that one imperfect looking tooth. The old tooth still remains there, but a cap would be placed onto the old tooth. And actually, should someone decide they would like to change or remove the veneer, that’s no problem, we can do that as well.

Now let’s say someone had a perfect set of teeth, but due to an unfortunate accident, one tooth is knocked loose, or half of it is chipped away, from their beautiful smile and they desperately wanted to get that tooth replaced or repaired. No problem! With our technology it is simple to replace the tooth, or a partial piece of the tooth, with a veneer. We can produce the best veneers that often end up making our patients smile looking even cleaner, better, and brighter than before. In this way, the patient is looking to replace or repair a tooth because of the obvious reason that doesn’t look just right, but they also might be replacing the tooth because they are now having trouble chewing their food, and they need the structural support of the presence of the full tooth to chew correctly. In this case, the addition of the structural support by the veneer is able to correct their issue.

Let’s say I already have a veneer, are there any recommendations for upkeep and maintenance?

The best upkeep and maintenance advice for your new veneers is to treat them just as you would your normal teeth. That means brushing and flossing regularly. You can’t scratch away the veneer just by brushing with normal non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste. The veneer is made of extremely hard material, so don’t worry about damage from brushing or flossing. BUT, if you do not brush and floss, the veneer could become discolored and no one wants discolored teeth. So be sure to brush regularly.

One of the most important aspects of maintenance is to be sure to visit your dentist a week to two weeks after the initial placement of the veneer. This meeting is especially important because your dentist now has the opportunity to evaluate the installation in terms of the veneer itself and its positioning relative to other teeth, and to assess any effect it might have on the surrounding gum tissue. Also, at this time you can ask the dentist any questions and concerns you might have about your new smiley future.

Lastly, if you haven’t already, be sure to let your dentist know if you are a teeth grinder. Some people grind their teeth at night (also known as bruxism). Bruxism can actually be the cause for needing veneers in the first place. If someone grinds their teeth at night so much that it causes their teeth to chip, or break loose entirely, they would need a veneer to cap off the tooth. And after getting a veneer, if they continued to grind their teeth, it could even cause the veneer to break loose. Your dentist can make a special mold (also called an occlusal guard), that you can wear at night that will protect your teeth from the damaged caused by night grinding.
